THE PROCESS -
The first challenge was to establish possible methods of recreating the 2D graphic by casting lights onto a surface. It was important to understand how each method could accuratley represent the original visual while showcasing different behavious of light
Method 01 uses a 3D light panel to cast light onto a surface.
Method 02 uses a shaped 3D light panel. Pulling the ends away from the surface softens the light.
Method 03 uses a spot light to project an image gobo onto the surface.
Aspects such as surface materiality and volumetrics were also explored for adding extra depth and texture.

MAINTAINING CONTROL
Recreating the graphic out of 3D light panels with method 01 and 02 had physically accurate behaviour and showcased a natural falloff and glow. However since the lights had to recreate a 2D graphic, the goal wasn't to achieve a realistic look. The 3D light panels would have been difficult to manipulate into a close representation of the original graphic.
For this reason method 03 was the chosen route with the result of method 02 used as reference for creating the image to be projected. This allowed for complete control of the look and behaviour of the light.

VOLUMETRICS
A small light was placed underneath the surface and was cast through cut out arcs, fanning the volumetrics up and giving them more definition.
This light was animated to add an additional subtle motion to the pulses.
